21% Travelers from USA Visited Asia For Hiking in 2017

Asia has seen a noteworthy increment in the proportion of people traveling from USA to indulge in adventure over the past 5 years. Hiking has been noted as the most preferred adventure activity among these travelers, followed by water-based activities holding the second position.

Recently, a research was conducted by Thrillophilia in collaboration with Heyhimalayas to study the changing trends of adventure travel in Asia continent. The report reveals that a major proportion of travelers from USA travel to Asia to indulge in some adventure activities on their tour. 63.9% of the total travelers from USA visited Asia in 2017 indulged in adventure activities. The figure was at 51.4% in 2012, and has grown by 12.5% since then.

“The report only confirms what we had anticipated. Such a noteworthy spike in the number of people from USA seeking adventure travel in Asia is an excellent news for the Asian travel industry. The governments and adventure travel companies in various countries all across the continent have made sincere efforts to promote adventure travel, and the results are overwhelming,” says Abhishek Daga, Co-Founder, Thrillophilia.

In the year 2017, 21.6% of the travelers belonging to the segment preferred hiking over other adventure activities on their visit to Asia. The second most preferred category was water sports as 17% of the total thrill-seekers indulged in water-based activities in different parts of Asia.

Nepal amassed a large number of the hikers between 2012 and 2017 as the popularity of Mt. Everest Summit Trek, Mt. Everest Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Circuit Trek has risen significantly over the period. 27% of the total hikers from USA indulged in hiking in Nepal.

The presence of the mountain ranges like Himalayas has contributed gracefully to the popularity of India as a hiking destination and the most favourite treks among US travelers are Chadar Trek and Stok Kangri Trek. India attracted 18% of the total US hikers in Asia. High altitude motorbiking, skiing and paragliding were also undertaken by the travelers in India. Bhutan also managed to attract a significant number of hikers to test their mettle in high altitudes.

Indonesia and Thailand served travelers from USA as the ideal destinations for water sports with wide array of water-based activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, river rafting, etc. 28.2% of the adventurers that travelled to Asia from USA indulged in various activities in Indonesia, while Thailand served 14.4% of them. Activities in Dubai like skydiving, dune bashing, bungee jumping, etc. attracted 9.8% of the total adventure-seekers to the destination in 2017 as compared to 7.2% in 2012. Besides, the popularity of adventure activities like scuba diving, wildlife safari, river rafting, and kayaking has also shown an impressive growth during the period.
