Mackinaw City’s Headlands International Dark Sky Park is the inspiration for Smash Mob’s new single/music video, Stars (Like Waterfalls), featuring renowned TV/Film composer/vocalist/performer Jacqueline van Bierk.  Headlands is a rare place where you can go to view the vast night sky without light pollution.  The 550-acre park overlooks 300 miles of dark skies on two miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline.  Its recognition as an “International Dark Sky Park” makes it only the sixth in the country and ninth in the world.

Headlands is local to Smash Mob’s (Frank Rogala and Jason Eldridge's) Mackinaw City recording studio. “When we were working on lyrics with Jacqueline, I told her about Headlands and we discussed how people no longer get to see the night sky.  Everyone is under artificial lights are staring at screens.  We have lost something right outside our door and over our heads that helps us understand our place in the universe,” explained Rogala.

“Being in Los Angeles, you forget there are even stars in the sky,” said vocalist/co-writer Jacqueline van Bierk.  “I love getting out into nature.  Having a park that looks over 300 miles of dark skies is a precious thing in today’s world.”

Shot at Smash Mob’s southern California Studio and various nearby outdoor locations, the video emphasizes the plight of the city dweller who has little access to dark skies. “I basically just walked out into the night and started shooting.  It’s pretty easy to demonstrate how ubiquitous artificial lights are.  When it came to actually showing a night sky, I knew I could never get the majesty, depth, and dimension in any accurate way.  Even big budget movies have unreal looking night skies. Rather than create another pale copy, I made the artistic decision to express the feeling it gives with glitter and computerized star effects”, explained Rogala, director of the music video.
