United States, Florida, Orlando - 11/10/2020 (PRESS RELEASE JET)

Dr. James Matas, a plastic surgeon based in Orlando, FL, offers advice on how to choose the right surgeon, including topics to research and questions to ask during a consultation.

Orlando, FL — When it comes to choosing a plastic surgeon, it is helpful to have as much information as possible about the prospective candidates. Many surgeons are capable of performing cosmetic procedures, but not all of them have the same credentials or experience. In order to help patients make informed decisions, board-certified Orlando Plastic Surgeon James Matas, MD provides insight into the attributes of a quality plastic surgeon and outlines questions that patients may want to ask during their consultation.

According to Dr. Matas, one of the most important factors to consider when deciding on a plastic surgeon is whether or not they are board-certified. The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is an organization that evaluates plastic surgeons on a number of factors, including experience, skill, and education. A board-certified plastic surgeon, then, is someone who has met the rigorous practical and ethical standards set by the ABPS. Furthermore, in order to maintain their board-certification, surgeons must periodically retake the exam and demonstrate their commitment to providing quality care and keeping up with advances in medical best-practices.

Once a patient has established that their prospective surgeon is board-certified, Dr. Matas recommends doing further research into the surgeon’s professional reputation. Involvement with organizations such as the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) can, according to Dr. Matas, indicate both a high level of expertise and an active interest in professional and surgical developments.

Board-certification and organizational memberships should be relatively simple to identify based on a surgeon’s professional profile. However, Dr. Matas also states that the quality of a doctor’s credentials should be measured alongside his or her ability to provide a comfortable and informative environment for their patients. As such, reading online reviews from past patients can be an excellent way to gain insight into the quality of a surgeon’s results, as well as their overall temperament and professionalism.

Prior to any surgical procedure, patients should always schedule an informational consultation with their surgeon. This is a patient’s opportunity to ask questions, request to see additional before-and-after photos, and communicate their own needs and concerns to the surgeon. Trust is vital to the relationship between surgeon and patient, and, according to Dr. Matas, any quality surgeon should be transparent and honest when answering questions or going over treatment plans. He recommends developing a list of questions prior to the consultation. Some of these questions may include:

  • How much experience do you have with this procedure?
  • Do you regularly perform this procedure? May I see a broad selection of before-and-after photos?
  • What side-effects or risks should I be aware of with this procedure?
  • Where will this procedure be performed? Is the facility accredited?
  • How long can I expect my recovery to take? Will I need to take time off from work?
  • How will my results change over time?

Ultimately, choosing a plastic surgeon is a deeply personal decision based on an array of factors, including credentials, surgical philosophy, cost predictions, and personal chemistry. Dr. Matas encourages all prospective patients to do thorough research so that they can make the decision that will help maximize their comfort and confidence going into the procedure.
