#GeorgesLaw Petition to Enact “George’s Law” has 100,000 signatures and counting; To be delivered to Governors Nationwide and Congressional leaders Portland, Oregon activist Michael Anthony calls for a new law in honor of racially motivated murder victim George Floyd and other people of color. [PORTLAND, OREGON, June 4, 2020—] 

A new petition authored by Portland, Oregon activist Michael Anthony calling for the creation of new legislation called “George’s Law” in honor of George Floyd, murdered while in police custody in Minnesota on May 25, 2020, and all those impacted by racist violence and terror. The law would make racially motivated crime an act of terror and declare racist hate groups terrorist organizations. The petition gained more than 100,000 signatures in a matter of days after it was posted on Change.org and shared extensively on social media platforms. “I believe that in order for us to create a world that we want to live in that we must take action. 

The greatest movements start at the grassroots level, and in 2020 we can no longer idly sit by while our government shields organizations built on the ideals of hate. As a person of color in America, I shouldn’t have to be worried that when I walk outside that, I might never come home simply because of my skin tone and neither should anyone else.” says Anthony. In part, the petition states, “Racism is at the forefront of more violence in this country than any other act. 

From slavery to Jim Crow and Segregation to the war on drugs and systematic indentured servitude along with mandatory minimum sentencing, covert racism has been a tradition ingrained in our society like hot dogs, baseball, and apple pie. However, there are not strict federal and national laws in place to combat acts of racism. Racist acts and racism is often either simply frowned upon or turned a blind eye towards. I propose that we immediately enact legislation that protects people of all races, colors, creeds, and orientations from heinous and deplorable acts of physical, mental, or emotional racist/hate-motivated act(s) or action(s). 

I propose that we make racially motivated crime an act of terror and racist/hate groups terrorist organizations.
