The earliest trace of learning goes back to the Egyptians who devised a system of communicating language, counting and agriculture through wall writings and graphics called hieroglyphics. Over time, the pedagogical thinkers have created more ingenious methods to bring innovation in the education landscape. When the Information Age began, the Internet has equipped people with technological advancements making virtual learning a reality.

Virtual Learning is interactive, simultaneous online learning via a web-based platform. Participants dial in using their own device from different locations. Its interactivity is enabled through various tools such as virtual whiteboard, online screen and file sharing, chatting, polling and microphone, and is facilitated by an instructor from a remote location. Like any other types of learning, virtual learning is oriented with objectives set before the course starts.

The use of classroom-type learning is the most common practice in schools and learning institutions. But bringing in different factors in the learning process, a student can easily prefer Virtual Learning because of its convenience and relevance to their learning progress. According to the 2011 CDW-G 21st Century Campus Report, 71% of the students believe that virtual learning increases flexibility in taking classes. 62% think that virtual learning gives the professional adults an opportunity to study while having a full-time job.

Both to an individual or an organization, Virtual Learning is a helpful solution to overcome training challenges and achieving quality results in a set timeframe. There is less cost and time which serves better productivity that is measured in a set of metrics by a qualified. Virtual Learning provides more interactive and engaging lessons because of its 24/7 accessibility through mobile technologies.

A 2014 Hanover research entitled Strategies for Virtual Learning Implementation presented data that showed the number of digital learners in the United States in 2009 and 2014. From 450,000 students in 2009, virtual/online charter schooled students upsurge to 3.78 million in 2014.

Virtual Learning promotes cultural diversity as it gathers different people with various cultural backgrounds. According to the Chi Sparks 2014 study called Digital Learning Environments and Collaborative Pedagogy: Media Culture 2020, the virtual learning environments allowed real-time interaction which had a significant value in enabling students from different countries to collaborate on a certain project. This highlights teamwork and the ability to be flexible and adaptable. A study by Gardner-Webb University discussing the effects of virtual learning on the cultural awareness of students (2014) showed that the virtual learning has helped students acquire knowledge impacts on the overall competence both for educators and learners. Through the established connectivity, this learning approach expands opportunities globally, having the advantage of reaching wider networks and creating bigger clout.

“The increasing demand for Virtual Learning shows that this approach meets the needs of students who are whether working, off-shore or geographically, unable to attend the classroom. As one of the latest trends in educational practice, it helps the student learn on the go with a range of tools readily available,” commented Romina Mahtani, CEO at Eton Institute, a leading international language and professional development training provider.

This May, Eton Institute invites language enthusiasts to learn two of its most popular languages – Spanish and French – through Virtual Learning. Facilitated by highly-qualified native instructors, the virtual classes will level up language skills of the students with its easy-to-use online platform.
