Industry Breakthrough as Start-Up Reveals New Therapeutic Ultrasound Device for Musculoskeletal Pain Relief.

In the past, ultrasound has only been partially successful in the treatment of pain due to the limited frequencies at which the devices have been able to operate. However, under the lead of Nico van Dongen, the team at Ultrasonic Pain Relief Ltd. has been able to develop a therapeutic ultrasound device that can generate lower frequency energy waves that are proven to be much more effective in treating musculoskeletal injuries. The technology is already at prototype stage and has been proven to work in a small case study. The company is now preparing to carry out the clinical testing necessary to bring to the product to market. 

In conventional ultrasound treatment, the sound waves aren’t able to penetrate deeply enough to be truly effective. However, the team at Ultrasonic has found a way to generate much lower frequency (at 20-40kHz) creating 3D acoustic pressure that is able to permeate all of the affected area, cutting off pain in tissue that previous technology was unable to reach. Just five minutes of treatment can reduce inflammation and bring about sustained pain relief within 24 hours. 

The device has proven so effective in the treatment of nociceptive and neuropathic pain that the team are testing it in a number of other applications, including the treatment of tendon injuries in horses, so there could be demand for the device in alternative niches such as the racing industry. 

‘Our therapeutic ultrasound device has proven to be much more effective than any previous ultrasonic treatment. We’ve seen it work for sports injuries, such as tennis elbow, runner’s knee and golfer’s elbow, as well as back pain and foot injuries. Once clinical trials are complete, we expect huge demand for the device in a number of markets.’ 

Recent studies suggest that low frequency, intense therapeutic ultrasound could have benefits for sufferers of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, depression and even cancer. 

In order to bring the product to market, clinical trials are the next step. It is envisaged the groundwork for this will commence in July 2017 at the Dunedin School of Medicine at the University of Otago in New Zealand. The trial is expected to start the following September under the supervision of renowned associate professor there, J. Haxby Abbott.
