Mom Invents Common-Sense Solution to Kids’ Germ-Filled Car Seats Launches on Kickstarter

TV reporter turned mompreneur Jinah Kim-Perek has launched a Kickstarter campaign for her common-sense solution to dirty kids’ car seats: the NIKO Easy-Wash Children's Car Seat Cover. The lab-tested, patent-pending NIKO will retail for between $39 and $45. But it’s available at a special low price of $20 to $25 for early-bird Kickstarter backers who sign up within the first 24 hours.

A University of Birmingham study found an average of 100 bacteria strains per square centimeter -- including E. coli and Salmonella -- on the kids’ car seats they tested. They found this to be double the amount found on the typical toilet seat.  According to another study, car seat maker Maxi-Cosi found most parents seldom wash their kids’ car seats. It’s no wonder given the number of holes and attachments that makes taking off the manufacturer’s car seat cover very onerous. What’s more, some car seat makers call for handwashing and line drying to avoid shrinkage.

Unlike other car seat covers on the market, the NIKO features:

  1. A waterproof lining to protect the car seat from juice spills and potty-training accidents.

  2. Cup-holder openings and two pockets on each side for storage for snacks, toys and those half-eaten lollipops kids try to hand you while you’re driving!

  3. Universal harness openings and super-strong elastic to fit most child car seats.

  4. Double-stitched seams.

  5. Ultra soft yet durable fabrics in various patterns and textures that can be washed and reused repeatedly.

  6. Takes just seconds to take off and put on.

Kim-Perek appeared live on KTVX ABC 4 Utah and KUTV CBS 2 -- and Good4Utah.com to promote the NIKO, 24 hours before the launch.

Kim-Perek, a part-time TV news correspondent, came up with the idea for the NIKO after a day at the beach left her then 2-year-old son Niko covered in wet sand. She searched stores for child car seat covers that functioned similarly to fitted sheets for beds. But nothing on the market suited her needs. She decided to make it herself. After nearly three years developing the NIKO Easy-Wash Children's Car Seat Cover, it finally launches on Kickstarter May 1.
